Forkroll

Privacy

Last updated 6 November 2026.

Forkroll has no accounts, no passwords and no tracking. Here is everything it keeps and sends.

On your phone

Your family members, allergies and diets, filters, scanned foods, turns and meal history are saved in your browser's storage on this phone. Deleting the app or clearing site data removes them.

If you turn on family sharing

The shared parts (people, allergies, scans, turns, meal history and cooking choices) are stored on Forkroll's server so your family's phones match. They are filed under a scrambled form of your family code, not the code itself. Anyone with the code can read and change that list, so share it only with family. To remove it at once, use Delete shared copy from the server under Family sharing; otherwise a copy nobody uses is deleted after a year without changes.

Looking things up

To find nearby places, your phone sends its saved location to Forkroll's server. The server uses it for that answer and doesn't store or log it. Typed towns and ZIP codes are looked up on the server, and the answer is cached for up to 30 days with nothing that identifies you. Scanned barcodes are looked up through Open Food Facts, a public food database, and cached the same way. Voting rooms are deleted from the server within two days.

Server logs

The server notes the time and kind of each request so problems can be fixed. Those notes leave out locations, typed places, family codes, room codes and barcodes, keep only a shortened form of your internet address, and are deleted within a week.

Counts

To know whether Forkroll is useful, the server keeps a few daily totals and nothing else: how many scans (and how many were for barcodes the food database doesn't know), picks, votes started and joined, and families created. For shared families it notes the last day the family's scrambled code was used, to count how many families were active in the past week and month. When you tap Share or Copy under Speak up, it adds one to that brand's total (once a day per internet address, checked in memory and not kept). None of these totals include a device ID, a name, a location, an advertising ID or anything else that could tell people apart. There are no analytics or tracking services in the app or the website.

Ads and payments

The website version has no ads. If the store app shows ads, they will be non-personalised: no tracking across apps or websites, and no food or drink advertisers where the ad network allows blocking them. Ads come from Google AdMob, which receives what it needs to show and count an ad (such as your internet address and device type) under Google’s policy. Ads never appear on the Scan screen and are never shown during a family vote. Removing ads is a one-time purchase handled by Apple or Google; Forkroll never sees your card details. No company can pay to change a Forkroll score.

Children

Kids can use the vote screen. Forkroll doesn't ask anyone for a name, email or age, and doesn't build profiles.
